What are diamond certificates?

It is well-known that every diamond is unique, but what are diamond certificates? The unique character of the diamond is underlined by a so-called "gemological certificate", which is like an identification card for the gemstone and is offered by various institutions. On this "certificate" you will find information and evaluations of the individual properties of the diamond.

The certification process can lead to different results, as each institute has its own requirements for the quality of a diamond. The most trustworthy and professional certifications come from the non-profit GIA (Gemological Institute of America). But the HRD (Hoge Raad voor Diamant) in Antwerp is also a renowned laboratory. Other institutes with slightly lower industry recognition are IGI (International Gemological Institute), EGL (European Gemological Laboratory) and AGS (American Gem Society).

Information on a certificate

A gemological certificate contains the following information:

  1. the weight of the diamond in carats,
  2. the colour level,
  3. the degree of purity,
  4. the type and quality of the cut.

It also usually contains the following information:

  • the dimensions of the diamond (and also the proportions for diamonds),
  • the degree of fluorescence,
  • the polish,
  • the symmetry,
  • the date of certification,
  • a representation of possible inclusions on a diagram,
  • general comments, e.g. on structural errors.

Transparency and verifiability

It is always possible to check the originality and correctness of a certificate online. The certificate number and the carat number of the diamond have to be indicated on the corresponding website of the institute. The following links will help you: GIA, HRD.

Our workshop sends the diamonds to the GIA laboratory in Carlsbad, California, for the certificate to be issued. To ensure that the extra charge for certification is in proportion to the value of the diamond, it is advisable to consult an external laboratory of this kind only for diamond sizes of one carat or more.

A calculation example:
A 0.15 carat diamond costs about €300. A certificate for this costs about 50 Euros and insured shipment to the United States about €20. Thus, the stone increases in price by 23%. For a diamond size of one carat, only a price increase of 1.4% has to be calculated for the cost of a certificate. For this reason, our diamond experts check smaller diamonds directly in our workshop.
